FINAL DRAFT
To the members of the Fairfax County School Board, parents, student and local business owners. There is a rise in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) careers all over the United States going on right now. With that rise in STEM careers, it is only natural that Fairfax County schools try their best to keep up with the times and give more options to students in order to prepare them for fields they might choose to purse later in life. With that all being said, I believe it is time for Fairfax County to try and give more to their students by expanding upon the Academy program in order to give more students the opportunities to explore STEM careers that might interest them later in life.
A point you may have thought of by now is why now? Why is now the time to improve the program? That’s a fair point, I believe now is the time to improve it because of Amazon. Amazon is moving their new Headquarters to Crystal City in Arlington. This will undoubtedly bring thousands of new jobs and opportunities for local kids to get a jump start in many different fields of interest. Not only at Amazon itself, but also in the surrounding area. More people working equals more cars to fix, people to feed, buildings to construct and so on. In short, this coming influx of thousands of positions is going to require a larger amount of trained employees to provide for them.
The Academy Program at Fairfax County includes many different trades that will be affected in the coming introduction of Amazon’s new headquarters. Not only in fields related to Amazon’s business but in others as well. There is automotive technology, automotive collision and repair, cyber security and even culinary arts. All of these fields will be impacted by a need for more workers to provide for all of the new people coming to the area in the next couple of years. All of these industries would require a great many new workers to provide services for the area.
In order to achieve my goals, there would first need to be some research into just how many jobs Amazon would be bringing to the area and how soon they plan of getting the completion of their new headquarters finished. Amazon had stated it plans to bring up to 37,850 new jobs in the area through the 2030’s, and real estate companies are already planning new homes to the area to accommodate these new employees. There is no word as yet on how soon they plan on accomplishing the new headquarters, but we can hope they will begin preliminary construction work within the year. As of right now, there is no official timeline as to when Amazon plans on finishing their new headquarters. But in the future, hopefully Amazon will release specific information as to the timeline of their construction, adding jobs and specific jobs needed to run the new headquarters. When this new information gets released, we can start to formulate a plan as to what specific sections of the academy can be upgraded and improved to facilitate the forthcoming job openings in the area.
So, who, ultimately would benefit from this needed upgraded to the program, and who would be affected negatively by this? The obvious benefit is the students themselves. Giving them a chance to explore a new area of interest and perhaps get them started along on a career that they would have otherwise not been able to pursue. The other benefactor of the improved academy is the local businesses that would need these new trained people to provide the services needed. A third benefit to this improved program is Northern Virginia itself. With a larger trained force of workers, the area will expand, improve and attract more business to set up investments in the area, generating more income and yet more jobs to the state of Virginia. All of this does not come without negative effects for some people though. The largest point of concern to anyone involved is the budget. Currently the most obvious solution is to raise some taxes in Fairfax County to pay for this. Historically some taxes that have been increased are refuse collection, refuse disposal and the real estate tax.
So, in conclusion, I propose that the Fairfax County School Board look at diverting more energy and resources to improving the academy program in order to facilitate a soon coming demand for a larger base of skilled workers needed for coming jobs to the area. The whole county will only benefit from this increase in trained workers not to mention hopefully attracting new corporations to set up investments in the county bringing more jobs and services needed to accommodate them. So, in short, I propose to you, the school board, the parents and the student themselves, work towards expanding and improving the academy program to have a larger base of skilled workers for jobs needed, and hopefully opportunities that will come to the area in the future.
